New Leisure Centre Coming to Salford

❝

If you have been missing the old Clarendon Leisure Centre, this is the news you have been waiting for. The Council has announced plans to build a brand new, state-of-the-art leisure centre on the same site and before any planning application goes in, they want residents to have their say on what it looks like.

The proposals on the table look impressive with a 25-metre five-lane swimming pool, a dedicated family splash pad, an 80-station fitness suite, a two-court sports hall, a community café with social spaces, and modern fully accessible facilities designed to work for people of all ages and abilities.

You can click here to have your say on the new leisure centre or attend the public consultation event in person at Pendleton Gateway on the 22nd of October. Either way, this is your chance to have a say in something that will benefit the whole community for years to come.

Restaurant of the week - My Greek Street Food

❝

Greek food does not get nearly enough attention in Salford, and My Greek Street Food on Liverpool road is proof of exactly what you've been missing.

This family-run favourite has been serving up Greek classics in Eccles since December 2021, with a menu that brings together traditional recipes, quality ingredients and plenty of family love.

There’s plenty to explore from cheesy bites to moussaka and baklava and the team describe their food as “worthy of the gods”. This is a bold claim, but when you look at what they are serving, it is hard to argue.

A few items worth trying:

  • Yeeros Pita Chicken

  • Kebab Stuffed with Philadelphia

  • Merida Suvlaki Chicken

  • Mix Skepasti

So, if you're looking to have some proper native Greek food without visiting Greece My Greek Street Food is worth a try. Click here to check out their full menu and plan your visit!

Beresford Edwards - The man who fought for the community

❝

October is Black History Month and this week we’ll be featuring someone who spent his whole life making Salford and Manchester a better place.

Beresford Edwards also known as Baba Berry or Chief Nana Bonsu, moved to Greater Manchester from Guyana in 1961. He came looking for a better life and ended up dedicating that life to everyone around him.

His High Court victory against his print union in 1969 which many recognised as a racially motivated act set the tone for everything that followed. He became a youth worker, a community leader and one of the influential figures Salford and Manchester has ever had.

He set up some of the country’s first Saturday schools for Black children. He founded the Manchester branch of the Pan-African Congress Movement. He played a key role in the campaign that helped shape the 1976 Race Relations Act. He opened a bookshop dedicated to African-Caribbean history. And he organised Culture Week, the direct forerunner to Black History Month.

When young Black men needed someone in their corner in courtrooms and employment tribunals, Berry showed up. Every single time!

He sadly passed away in 2003 but his legacy lives on in every Black History Month celebration this country holds. This one is for him. 🖤
