£9.9m funding boost for Crescent regeneration

❝

Salford is taking another step towards a major transformation, with a £9.9 million funding boost set to help drive forward the ambitious Crescent Salford regeneration scheme.

Part of a wider £2.5 billion masterplan covering 240 acres, the project aims to bring new transport connections, new employment opportunities, education facilities, commercial spaces and over 3,000 new homes.

The funding comes through the next phase of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's Good Growth Fund and will help deliver better walking and cycling routes, improved public spaces and the infrastructure needed to connect communities.

The plans are being delivered in partnership with Salford City Council, the University of Salford and English Cities Fund, with the ambition of bringing education, business and local communities closer together.

It's another significant development in the ongoing transformation of Salford Crescent, with the funding helping to lay the foundations for what could be a very distinct area in the years ahead.

Restaurant of the Week - Porta Tapas

❝

Fancy a little taste of Spain without leaving Salford? This week's restaurant spotlight takes us to Porta Tapas, a popular independent tapas bar in the beautiful surroundings of Bexley Square.

Housed in a former bank building, Porta brings a relaxed Spanish atmosphere to Chapel Street. With its traditional setting, welcoming feel and sharing-style menu, it's the sort of place that makes you want to slow down, order a few plates and enjoy a proper catch-up.

Porta was founded by brothers Ben and Joe Wright, who opened their first tapas bar in Chester in 2012 after being inspired by their travels through Spain and Portugal. Following the success of their original venue, they brought Porta to Salford in 2018.

A few items worth trying:

  • Fried Andalusian style squid with alioli

  • Charcutería - Chorizo, Salchichón Ibérico, Lomo

  • Burnt Basque cheesecake with sour cherry compote

  • Grilled wild Atlantic prawns with ajillo dressing

Tip: Porta operates on a walk-in basis and no reservations. It's open Tuesday to Saturday from midday until 10.30pm and Sunday until 9pm. Click here to check out their full menu and plan your visit!

Meet the Salford teenager taking on Chile's biggest stages

❝

Picture being 16, still at college, and finding out you're playing two nights at an arena in Chile. That's real life right now for John Denton, an indie musician from Irlam.

It all started with a family friend in Chile who sent John's music to Álvaro Henríquez, the frontman of Los Tres, and the rest is history.

This month he's flying to Santiago to support Los Tres at the Santander Arena. Around 30,000 people across two nights, and both shows are sold out. It's the same arena that has hosted Beyoncé, Robbie Williams and Paul McCartney.

Before this, his biggest crowd was around 500. His first ever gig was at Malaga Drift in Eccles, which is now 96 Degrees, and he also won the Johnny Marr Award back in 2023.

John says the promoters in Chile didn't want to wait until next summer, so they asked him to come out early. Big ups to John for making Salford proud!

Celebrating Salford's young voices: Salford Youth Day film festival

❝

Salford's youths have been given the chance to take centre stage, sharing their stories, creativity and ambitions through a special film festival celebrating the next generation.

More than 60 young people from youth groups across the city came together on Wednesday 28 October for the Salford Youth Day film festival, held at the University of Salford's Mary Seacole Building.

Organised by Salford City Council's Youth Council Service, the event provided a platform for young people to showcase films exploring their lives, experiences, achievements and aspirations.

Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, the young participants were the storytellers, using film to express themselves and give others a glimpse into the issues and interests that matter to them.

It's easy to overlook just how much talent, ambition and creativity exists among the younger generation, but events like this are a brilliant reminder.

Giving young people a voice isn't just about celebrating what they can achieve today; it's about helping them build the confidence and skills to shape Salford's future tomorrow.

Salford's youths have plenty to say, and when they get the chance, they do it remarkably. Click here to find out more.
